Joan Billingham Wounded Soldiers
Joan Billingham was evacuated from Essex by her mother in 1942 and eventually ended up in Kington. She worked in the town laundry and often visited the camp to talk to the wounded American soldiers, who would otherwise have had no visitors. Joan is also a singer and would sing both at the camp and in the Burton Hotel. She met General Omar Bradley in 1944, when he came to Kington and came to the laundry to thank the girls who worked there for their efforts.
